Why is Crown Lengthening required?

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening a surgical procedure carried out by dentist to expose a greater amount of tooth structure for the purpose of restoring the tooth. This procedure involves excessing small amount of gingival tissue around the tooth. Furthermore, it is important to understand the excessive gums (gummy smile). The most common conditions requiring crown lengthening are: teeth that are too short, tooth decay that is severe below the gum line, or a broken or fractured tooth beneath the gum line. When a tooth experiences severe decay or breaks, the healthy area that remains is reduced.

Advantages of Crown Lengthening

Unlike many other cosmetic dentistry treatments, crown lengthening only needs to be done once. In addition to creating a broader, more symmetrical smile, crown lengthening can provide other dental care benefits. Crown lengthening treatments can also reduce tooth decay because more of the tooth is exposed to brush and floss.

Preparing for Treatment

This procedure can often be completed in about an hour. Before your surgery, x-rays will be taken. Your medical history will also be reviewed with your dentist or surgeon to go over any current medications you are taking or any other health concerns that could potentially affect the surgery outcome. A thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and bone structure will be performed before your treatment. Additionally, to better help determine if crown lengthening surgery is right for you, your dentist will predetermine how much of the gums will need to be removed or contoured to achieve your desired results.

Indications for Crown Lengthening procedures:

Patients with gum disease or tooth fracture ,may require crown lengthening to repair the damage.

Patients with a gummy smile where the gums cover too much of the teeth. With crown lengthening, patients can get a much bigger, brighter, and more confident smile.

Dr. Arun Chamria brings up a very remarkable comparison between the amount of teeth visible and the proportion of it to one’s age.

Some patients may not have adequate tooth structure on top of the gum to allow for proper fitting of a crown. Hence, if a crown is placed, it can damage the gums or cause inflammation and discomfort. Crown lengthening will ensure that the new crown will fit the tooth completely and comfortably.

Dental Crown Lengthening Procedure

During the dental crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped. Teeth and gums will be a little sensitive for some time following the procedure. So usually patients are advised to avoid very hot or cold drinks and food for a while.

Furthermore, the patient may be advised not to brush or floss near the area of the procedure. There may be moderate, occasional bleeding of gums seen. An ice pack should reduce the swelling during the first hours of surgery. Patients told to avoid alcoholic beverages or smoking tobacco products for early recovery.
