What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, infections, injuries, and other conditions that affect the oral cavity, the area that includes the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. The practitioners who work in this field are called oral surgeons or dentists who specialize in oral surgery. They can be general dentists who have received additional training or specialists who have received advanced training in oral surgery.

Why should one consult an oral maxillofacial surgeon?

If you have a toothache, oral surgery is the best solution. You need to see an oral surgeon as soon as possible because the sooner you visit them, the quicker they can diagnose and treat the problem. It’s important to note that the oral surgeon will only treat the affected tooth. Issues with surrounding teeth, gums, and other parts of your mouth will have to be addressed by a general dentist. If your tooth has been broken, it should also be treated by an oral surgeon. Many people think that a broken tooth can be fixed by a dentist. This is a misconception because only an oral surgeon can treat your broken tooth.

Extracting Teeth – why does It hurt so much?

The main reason why teeth extraction hurts more is that the mouth is sensitive. Once the tooth is loosened, the patient is numbed using common dental anesthesia. The other reason is that more teeth are impacted now compared to the past. Impacted teeth are those that are not emerging from the gums into the mouth normally.

Root canal treatment in one day?

A tooth’s pulp is the soft tissue in the center of the tooth that contains blood vessels, lymph nodes, and nerves. When a tooth is damaged, its pulp may become infected. If the infection is not treated, the tooth may have to be removed. The most common reason for tooth root canal therapy is an injury to the soft tissue inside the tooth or when the nerve inside the tooth dies due to bacterial infection.

Root canals are generally recommended when a tooth has been seriously damaged or decayed. The bacteria in the tooth can travel to other organs, so the tooth must be removed. The procedure of root canal therapy is not an easy one. It is an invasive and painful process that requires a specialist in oral surgery.

Other types of Surgeries | Oral Surgeon

  • Dental implants – These are used to replace missing teeth. This is also known as osseointegration surgery.
  • Alveolar osteotomy – This is a surgery to correct the alignment of teeth. The surgery aims to re-open spaces between two teeth to establish enough space for another tooth.

  • Orthognathic surgery – This is a surgical correction of the jaws to correct an improper bite. This is a very complex surgery that involves repositioning and re-alignment of the jaws.
  • Resection – This surgery is done in the case of oral cancer that has gone beyond the mucous membrane.

Final words by Oral Surgeon

No one likes going under the knife, but with modern oral surgery techniques it’s a quick and painless experience, and the results are well worth it. Oral surgery patients recover quickly and experience less swelling and discomfort than patients who undergo general anesthesia. If you have any concerns about your oral health, make an appointment with your dentist to discuss your treatment options. If necessary, they may refer you to an oral surgeon.
