Dental Implants are the latest and most effective solution for restoring your teeth and your confidence. But just like any other dental procedure, your implants need care and attention to stay healthy. There are several things you can do to maintain good oral hygiene with implants but it might take some getting used to. Good food is one of the factors. Here is how you can maintain a happy and healthy smile with dental implants!

Brush and Floss Daily for Oral Hygiene

You’ve probably heard this before; but brushing and flossing are your best weapon against cavities and gum disease. As your implants are fixed in place, you’ll need to change how you brush and floss.

Brushing – Instead of brushing with an up and down motion, try brushing with a side to side motion. This will allow you to reach all the surfaces of your teeth and gums.

Flossing – Instead of flossing around the teeth, try flossing around the implants. This will allow you to remove plaque and food particles from around the implant without disturbing any of the healing tissue. Always use a floss with a soft and wide thread to avoid causing damage to your gums.

Watch What You Eat

You can’t brush and floss your teeth every minute of the day. That’s where what you eat comes into play. You can’t just eat anything and everything. You have to be careful with your diet as dental implants are delicate. If you eat something that’s too tough for your teeth, it will damage your implants. Try to avoid hard and sticky foods. Your dentists may also suggest you take certain vitamins or supplements to help strengthen your teeth and gums.

Eating foods good for oral cavity is better to maintain mouth hygiene.

Hard Foods – Even though dental implants are stronger than real teeth, they can still be damaged by hard foods. Avoid chewing on ice, corn on the cob, and popcorn kernels as they can chip or crack your dental implants. You should also try to avoid chewing on other hard foods or objects.

Sticky Foods – Sometimes it can be difficult to avoid sticky foods like caramel, toffee, and some fruits like pears and apples. If you must eat these sticky foods, try to do so with your implants on the inside of your mouth.

Maintain a healthy Mouth

Your gums will be healing from the implants procedure for some time. This means that you need to be extra careful not to cause any damage to your gums. Try to avoid biting your nails, smoking, or even biting into an apple with your teeth. Also avoid any other habits that can be harmful to your healing gums such as excessive gum chewing or constant gum rubbing. Maintain hygiene by using gum massage pastes like gummed recommended by your dentist.

Avoid Excessive Gum Chewing – You may be tempted to chew on your gums to help with the pain and discomfort from your implants. But this can cause damage to your gums and increase the risk of bleeding.

Avoid Gum Rubbing – You should avoid touching or rubbing your gums with your fingers or any other objects. This can lead to irritation, infection, and even gingivitis.

Don’t Forget About Dental Visits

Your oral health will be improved after the dental implants are placed, but it’s important to continue to visit your dentist regularly. You should visit your dentist after your implants have fully healed, usually after 3-6 months. Your dentist will clean the implants and surrounding area, check the implants are in place and healthy, and also look for any signs of infection. Your dentist will also be able to advise you on any dietary changes or any extra care that you need to take. These are some tips on how you can maintain a happy and healthy smile with dental implants. With these tips, you’ll be able to keep your oral hygiene at par.
