Dental ceramics are biocompatible, tooth coloured restorative material used specially for designing anterior crowns and bridges, veneers in order to enhance the smile of an individual. When ceramic is layered onto the zirconia coping, its strength decreases. When it is subjected to high occlusal forces, it leads to fracture or chipping. It allows spontaneous crack propagations resulting in a fracture with little occlusal loading particularly over long periods. Any blow to the restoration due to a fall, a fight, road accidents or sports accident can also result in immediate fracture of metal free ceramics.
Occlusal interference also play a major role in fracture of metal free ceramics. Any premature contact in centric and eccentric movements generate increased localized stresses in the porcelain. These stresses create cracks which lead to chipping fracture of surface porcelain. Metal free ceramic restorations are exposed to small alternating forces during mastication. Such repeated loading may lead to fatigue of the restoration.
