Wisdom tooth are called so because they usually come when you’re older. These teeth are in the very back of your mouth and are the last ones to erupt. There are two on the top and two on the bottom jaws. When these erupt in straight-line axis, the extraction is pretty simple without any complications. There may be cases where wisdom teeth removal may become more surgical. How is the recovery after an extraction?

Get In Touch

Call Now

Who is this article for?

This article is for patients who have been advised wisdom tooth removal or have recently undergone wisdom tooth surgery. It is especially useful for patients with impacted wisdom teeth, swelling, pain, stitches, limited mouth opening, or fear of dry socket. Recovery after wisdom tooth surgery varies from patient to patient and depends on the position of the tooth, depth of impaction, bone removal, infection, age, medical history, and post-operative care.

What is normal after wisdom tooth surgery?

Mild pain, swelling, slight bleeding, jaw stiffness, difficulty opening the mouth, and discomfort while eating can be normal after wisdom tooth surgery. These symptoms are usually more noticeable in the first few days and gradually reduce with proper rest, medicines, soft food, and oral hygiene instructions. Impacted wisdom tooth surgery may take longer to heal than a simple extraction.

Wisdom tooth recovery timeline

On the first day, mild bleeding, numbness, and swelling may be present. During days 2 to 3, swelling and discomfort may peak. From days 4 to 7, pain and swelling should slowly start reducing. Stitches may be removed around one week if non-dissolving sutures were used. By the second week, many patients feel much better, but deeper bone and gum healing may continue for several weeks, especially after impacted wisdom tooth surgery.

Emergency Tooth Extraction

For an Impacted wisdom teeth extraction, the recovery period is between 3-4 weeks. Sutures may be removed after a week but the wound site is raw. It is normal to therefore have a slight oozing and numbness on the site even after extraction which will cease after 24 hrs. You may sometimes feel stiffness in jaw and difficulty in mouth opening. You may be advised to eat soft food for a week and avoid spicy food, tobacco, smoking and alcohol. No spitting, heavy exercising, forceful rinsing till the clot forms!

How long does swelling last after wisdom tooth surgery?

Swelling is common after wisdom tooth removal, especially when the tooth was impacted or surgically removed. Swelling may increase during the first 48 hours and then slowly reduce over the next few days. Using an ice pack as advised in the first 24 hours, keeping the head slightly elevated, and following medicines properly can help improve comfort.

Once the extraction performed the extraction site thoroughly washed with betadine for no residue of any infection. The retracted gingiva then sutured to its place and a gauze pack given to the patient to reduce bleeding and clot formation. Which in turn helps in healing. The healing process can be broken into the following stages:

First 24 hours the Blood clot will form.

Next 2 to 3 days, Swelling in mouth and cheeks should improve.

Day 7th: A dentist can remove any stitches that remain.

7th to 10th Day: Jaw stiffness and soreness should go away.

Post 2 weeks: Complete recovery is possible.

What should you eat after wisdom tooth surgery?

Soft, cool, and easy-to-chew foods are usually preferred for the first few days. Patients may eat curd, soft rice, dal, khichdi, soup that is not too hot, mashed potatoes, smoothies without a straw, soft pasta, or scrambled eggs. Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, very hot, sticky, or seed-containing foods because they may irritate the wound or get trapped in the socket.

What should you avoid after wisdom tooth removal?

Avoid smoking, tobacco, alcohol, vigorous rinsing, spitting forcefully, drinking through a straw, heavy exercise, and chewing from the surgical side during the early healing period. These actions may disturb the blood clot and increase the risk of delayed healing or dry socket. Follow the exact instructions given by your dentist or oral surgeon.

How to keep the mouth clean after surgery

Do not rinse aggressively on the day of surgery unless your surgeon advises otherwise. From the next day, gentle warm salt-water rinses may be advised. Brush the rest of your teeth gently, but avoid directly disturbing the surgical site. Good oral hygiene helps reduce food lodgement, bad breath, and infection risk during healing.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is a painful healing problem that can happen if the blood clot at the extraction site is lost or disturbed. It may cause severe pain a few days after surgery, bad taste, bad smell, and pain spreading toward the ear, temple, or neck. Dry socket is treatable, but it needs a dental visit. Patients should not try to pack the socket at home.

Get In Touch

Call Now

When should you call the dentist after wisdom tooth surgery?

Call your dentist or oral surgeon if pain suddenly worsens after initially improving, bleeding does not stop, swelling increases after 4 to 6 days, there is pus, fever, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, severe bad taste, numbness that does not improve, or inability to open the mouth. These signs may indicate dry socket, infection, nerve irritation, or another post-surgical complication.

Can you go back to work or college after wisdom tooth surgery?

Many patients can return to routine work or college within a few days after simple extraction. Impacted wisdom tooth surgery may need more rest, especially if swelling, pain, sedation, or multiple extractions were involved. Avoid heavy workouts and strenuous activity for a few days or as advised by your oral surgeon.

Why impacted wisdom tooth recovery may take longer?

An impacted wisdom tooth may be partly or fully trapped in gum or bone. Surgical removal may involve a gum incision, bone removal, or sectioning of the tooth. Because of this, recovery may involve more swelling, stiffness, and soreness than a simple extraction. Proper aftercare and follow-up are important for smooth healing.

Ear Pain After Tooth Extraction

The nerves running in close proximity to the are inferior alveolar nerve, mental nerve branch of inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerve. Impacted or complex wisdom tooth surgery may take longer, and deeper healing can continue for several weeks.

Is swelling normal after wisdom tooth removal?

Yes. Swelling is common, especially after impacted wisdom tooth surgery. It may peak in the first 48 hours and then gradually reduce.

When can I eat normally after wisdom tooth surgery?

Start with soft foods and slowly return to normal food as comfort improves. Avoid hard, spicy, crunchy, sticky, or very hot foods until the area heals properly.

Can I drink through a straw after wisdom tooth extraction?

It is better to avoid straws during early healing because suction can disturb the blood clot and increase the risk of dry socket.

How do I know if I have dry socket?

Dry socket may cause severe pain a few days after extraction, bad taste, bad breath, and pain spreading toward the ear or temple. Contact your dentist if pain worsens instead of improving.

Is jaw stiffness normal after wisdom tooth surgery?

Yes, some stiffness or limited mouth opening can happen after wisdom tooth surgery, especially in impacted lower wisdom teeth. It should gradually improve, but severe or worsening stiffness should be checked.

When are stitches removed after wisdom tooth surgery?

If non-dissolving stitches are used, they may be removed after about a week. Dissolving stitches may fall out on their own. Your surgeon will advise based on the case.

Can I brush my teeth after wisdom tooth removal?

Yes, but brush gently and avoid disturbing the surgical site. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about rinsing and cleaning near the extraction area.

When should I visit urgently after wisdom tooth surgery?

Visit urgently if there is uncontrolled bleeding, fever, pus, worsening swelling, severe pain, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, or persistent numbness.

Having multiple wisdom teeth won’t make you smarter!
