Dental technicians work alongside dentists and dental hygienists in dental practices. They assist with dental procedures that don\u2019t require the expertise of a dentist or hygienist. For example, a dental technician may take x-rays, prepare patients for procedures<\/a> by cleaning teeth, take impressions of patients’ mouths to make custom mouth guards or dentures, or even fill cavities with temporary filler if the patient is at risk for infection if the tooth isn\u2019t treated right away. A dental technician works directly with patients under the supervision of an orthodontist or dentist. In some cases, they may have more experience than other members of the team.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Dental technicians make and repair dental appliances, such as false teeth, crowns, bridges, implants or braces. Dentists use these appliances to replace or improve their patients’ teeth, speech, appearance or ability to chew.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The dental<\/a> technician\u2019s responsibilities include fabricating dental appliances, administering anesthesia, sterilizing equipment, and assisting the dentist with diagnostic and treatment procedures. Dental technicians may work in the lab fabricating custom orthodontic appliances such as retainers, mouth guards, and dentures.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Technicians may also work in the office administering local anesthesia, taking x-rays, sterilizing equipment, and assisting the dentist during diagnostic and treatment procedures. Dental technicians must be aware of all state licensure requirements and may need to hold a license in order to practice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Dental X-Ray by Technician<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The dental x-ray technician\u2019s responsibilities include preparing patients for x-rays by fitting the patient with a lead apron, positioning the patient\u2019s jaw, and operating the x-ray machine. The x-ray technician <\/a>must be familiar with the operation of the machine and be able to position the patient correctly for the best quality images. X-rays are an essential part of the dental examination.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
