Introduction
The short answer is, yes, technically, it is possible to replace wisdom teeth with dental implants. But the real question is, do you want or need to replace the wisdom tooth? Here are some of the factors to consider when discussing dental implants, the third molar, and the replacement of missing teeth.
Factors: To replace wisdom teeth with dental implant
Removal of 3rd molar – Most often the 3rd molars are removed due to lack of space in the mouth. The jaw is already full of teeth and the 3rd molar eruption causes crowding. Therefore, due to lack of space, the 3rd molar may not be replaced.
Decay in 3rd molar – Another common reason to remove 3rd molar is that, the oral hygiene maintenance may be difficult. This results in decay. The decayed 3rd molar can be saved by filling or in advanced conditions by performing a root canal therapy. For very severe cases, an extraction may be warranted. In such cases if the opposing tooth is intact then a replacement can be thought off.
Amount of space available – Most of the cases of 3rd molar removal are due to impacted or stuck 3rd molar in the jaw. This happens due to lack of space in the jaw for the 3rd molar to erupt. And hence in such cases a replacement is not required.
Bone related factors – The 3rd molar especially the upper ones are located in the region of weak bone area. In this area the bone is usually weaker and also less due to the presence of sinuses. This also deters placement of dental implants.
Many feel that if the 3rd molar is not replaced then food might get stuck or there may be decay in the neighbouring teeth. But, in reality the bone and the gums heal. The area become smooth and will not harbour any debris.
Conclusion
So yes, it is possible to replace a wisdom tooth with dental implants. But in most cases it provides no additional advantage.
