Are Zygomatic Dental Implants Safe?
Zygomatic Dental implants are medical grade titanium screws which get anchorage to the cheek bone. The purpose of such an implant is to facilitate dental crown for the upper jaw. The main indication of placing these dental implants are cases where the upper jaw bone is very weak or has been lost due to age, trauma, tumor, cancer, or previously placed dental implants.
Zygomatic implants were traditionally placed by cutting into the gums and raising a flap from the upper jaw to the cheek bone. These procedures were done under general anesthesia. Then with advances in CT scan and advent of CBCT placement of zygomatic implants became more predictable even under local anesthesia.
With the advances in equipment technology, CAD-CAM, 3D printing, and dental materials now it is possible to place zygomatic implants even without raising a flap or giving sutures. Also, with the advances in this technique it is also possible to customize the implant which aids in placement of implant in repeat or failure cases. This process is called a pin hole technique or flapless zygoamtic implant placement.
The major complication during placement of zygomatic implant is the orientation of the implant. As the orbit and the blood vessels are close by, the orientation during placement of the implant is of paramount importance. To aid in this, 3D printed surgical guides ease the process for the operating doctor and also increases patient comfort.
