Different drugs are prescribed by a dentist depending upon the present condition. The dose of drugs differs from patient to patient, depending on what the drug is used for, patients age, weight or allergies. There are many different pain medicines and each one has its own advantages and side effects. Some types of pain respond better to certain medicines than others. Each person may have a slightly different response to pain reliever.

Paracetamol:

It is effective for mild to moderate pain, to avoid large doses, recheck if the other medicines do not contain the same active ingredients as it can cause serious liver damage. Arthritis medicines and over the counter cold and flu medicines contain paracetamol. Paracetamol can also be given to children from the age of 1month for pain and symptoms of fever.

Ibuprofen:

Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are effective against mild to moderate pain. These medicines should be taken only at lowest dose that improve the symptoms and for a short time. They are not suitable for people with stomach problems, heart problems, kidney impairment, high blood pressure or asthma. In older people, these drugs are usually not recommended. It can be given in children for pain who are greater than 3 months and who weigh more than 5kg. Avoid ibuprofen in children having asthma.

Ketorolac:

It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for treatment of moderate to severe pain. This should not be used for mild or long term painful conditions. It should not be taken in case of liver or kidney diseases, heart problems and coagulation disorders.

Chymoral Forte:

Is an anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drug. It reduces pain and swelling. Given post dental treatment.

Tramadol and Acetaminophen (Ultracet):

When all the above said drugs fail to relieve pain then this medicine is prescribed. Used in cases of severe pain and post chemotherapy. They can be used following dental and surgical procedures. Should be avoided in severe asthmatics, liver and kidney diseases. Dosage is take it twice a daily every 4 to 6 hrs not more than 5 days under doctor’s supervision.

Morphine:

Belongs to the opioid family of drugs. It can be taken for both acute and chronic pain. Its action is directly acting on the central nervous system, giving a state of euphoria. Dosage: Injection Intra muscular, intra venous or oral suspensions. Side effects: Low blood pressure, drowsiness. It is highly addictive. This should be sold and only administered after doctor’s consent and instructions.
